Fireworks in a Jar

Fireworks in a jar is a fun science experiment for kids that uses a few simple household ingredients. You can watch a video tutorial from Whiz Kid Science HERE to see the steps of the experiment in action. Follow the steps below to create your own firework show at home!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Jar of water
  2. Small bowl
  3. 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  4. Food coloring
  5. Fork

Steps: Fill you jar 3/4 full with warm water. Add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to a small bowl. Add 3-4 drops of each color of food coloring to the bowl of oil. With a fork, gently mix the oil to break the food coloring into smaller droplets. Then pour the oil mixture slowly into your water. The vegetable oil will sit on top of the water at first. Wait and watch as the food coloring slowly sinks into the water creating bursts of color, or fireworks!
