This spring, Wayland voters have the opportunity to accept funding from a state grant and finance the construction of a new library located at 195 Main Street.
The preliminary conceptual design calls for a two-story facility with the following features:
· A variety of seating options, including comfortable reading areas, a dedicated quiet area for uninterrupted work, and several individual and small-group study rooms for collaboration, tutoring, and working
· A midsize conference room for community meetings
· A large, cheerful children’s space and a dedicated space for teens
· A 100 seat meeting/program room available for after-hours events
· A technology lab as well as smart and integrated technology access throughout the building
· A café/conversational area
The new library will reflect Wayland’s green and sustainability commitments by a design that will lower energy operating costs, reduce the lifetime carbon impact, and benefit user health.

A DESTINATION FOR LIFELONG LEARNING
Learners of all ages depend on the Wayland Free Public Library to expand their horizons. The new building will better support their needs with a variety of thoughtfully designed spaces for quiet and
collaborative work, resources and technology to support their projects, and educational programming for intellectual engagement and growth.

A CHILDREN’S ROOM WITH MORE POSSIBILITIES
The Children’s Room will be a cheerful, flexible, child-centered space with robust and creative programming. It will also feature:
– A space with a washable floor perfect for arts and crafts
– A story-time and play area for toddlers and preschoolers
– A reading and work area for school-age children
– Furniture for children and adults
– Moveable book stacks that are the right height for children, and can roll away to make room for other activities
– A children’s bathroom, a place to hang coats, and stroller parking
A DEDICATED SPACE FOR TEENS
Teens will have input in the design and activities planned for this space. The room will have comfortable seating for reading, as well as work tables for collaboration or group study. It will have up-to-date computers and technology, moveable stacks, and a flexible space for “maker” programming. Activities will be tailored for teens and tweens, and responsive to their changing interests and needs.
This state grant is a one-time opportunity. If voters do not vote to fund the town’s investment, the grant will go to another municipality.Estimated Project Cost:

The average household’s cost would be $313 (or $6 per week) for the first year and will decrease each year thereafter.
The Board of Selectmen, Finance Committee and School Committee have all voted in support of this project.
