Library Policy on Fines

Wayland has joined a growing national trend by removing overdue fines on most materials borrowed at the Wayland Free Public Library. The library will continue to issue date due and overdue notifications.

Items that will continue to have overdue charges:

  • Museum passes – $10.00 per day
  • Hotspots and other circulating Library of Things items – $25.00 per day
  • In-house Library of Things items – depends on the thing
  • Non-Minuteman Library Network interlibrary loans – fines vary according to the loaning library, typically between 25¢ and $2 per day

Items from other Minuteman libraries that are checked out at the Wayland Public Library will not accrue overdue fines, regardless of where the material came from within the Minuteman Library Network. We cannot waive existing fines on your account from other libraries.  They fall outside the scope of our fine policy, and you will need to contact the owning library.

Billed items on your account

After the final overdue notice, borrowers will receive a bill for the cost of the material by email or mail.

When the item is returned, the “Billed” status and bill are removed and there are again no overdue fines, as long as the item is eligible.

Account activity blocked because of fines

When an account has over $10 in fines or a billed item, it may be blocked from certain actions, such as checking out or requesting items.
